Funerals – How Much and Who Pays?

Recent figures show the average cost of a funeral is £3,675.  Sometimes the person who dies has already paid for their funeral or they have left money to pay for it.  If so the executors of the estate will take care of paying the funeral bill, otherwise, usually a relative or friend pays for the funeral.  But they can get the funeral costs back from the estate eventually if there is enough in it.

The local council or hospital can arrange a Public Health Funeral IF:  There isn’t enough money in the estate or there are no relatives or friends available to arrange the funeral.  If you are getting certain benefits, you can also apply for a Funeral Payment from the government to help you pay for the funeral, this is a loan and has to be repaid from the persons estate, such as savings or house sale.  It may not have to be repaid if the persons estate only consists of personal belongings.
